Wednesday Wow ::: Kim and Kanye's Engagement Ring

Love them or hate them...or the amount publicity they receive, that ring is AH-MAZING.

The Kim and Kanye ring was designed and crafted by Lorraine Schwartz, who was actually the 4th jeweler he worked with, and with a last minute design change, it's been said that this ring was only a few hours old when he presented it to his intended.  The design is based on that of a compass, not entirely surprising, considering their child's name is North and their last name (she's taking his name, btw) is West.

A 15 Carat D-Color, Flawless Cushion Cut, a rep for the designer told E! that "the ring is flawless. Not just internally flawless, it's flawless. It's a D-stone, the best diamond there is, type IIa," shares the rep, adding "It's a perfect cushion cut diamond."   The incredible diamond is set compass-style, with prongs at North, East, South and West, on a very delicate micro-pave band, with a micropave basket.  I hope she pairs this ring with some matching tiny micropave wedding bands, and perhaps a tiny plain one mixed in as maybe a spacer.

Type IIa diamonds are incredibly rare, and incredibly valuable. They're often called "Golcondas", after the region in India they were mined in from long-exhausted mines. What makes them so special is their composition. They're mostly, if not completely, devoid of nitrogen, meaning they are pure carbon, and are formed under more extreme pressure than most diamonds.

Some of the most famous stones are Type IIa stones, for example The Cullinan Diamond and the Koh-I-Noor, among them.  They are usually incredibly clear stones in terms of clarity grading, and completely colorless, sometimes exhibiting an ethereal blue-white "glow" despite being devoid of fluorescence.
